Theosis is a very-much under-studied topic in Evangelical theology. I think you guys could really benefit from a closer look at those scriptures.
Of course, simply asserting theosis does NOT mean you have to buy into the Mormon notion of ontological similarity with God. So no worries there, at least.
As I commented on my blog, Payton’s piece ignores the crucial aspect of ecclesiology, and the related issue of participation in the sacraments/mysteries, in his discussion of the Orthodox (and Roman Catholic) doctrine of theosis.
